See the high school that uses Projects and Digital Portfolios (online websites) to show the work of students ... Oprah visited this school with Bill Gates

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF06lpwC-ho

Oprah visited High Tech High in California with Bill and Melinda Gates.
Students who were bored at their previous school excel at High Tech High.
Oprah visited with Bill Gates
In 2006, Gates was on Oprah's TV
show and Oprah declared "a national
emergency"  (April 2006)
"BEFORE I came to High Tech High, I was bored."

Get better at Math using MATH WORKOUT ... SPREAD THE WORDS app will help build your vocabulary

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.akbur.mathsworkout&hl=en

Here is my review of the app

What videos can we show to people in China? What videos will entice them to visit our blog?

Look at this collection of videos
http://tinyurl.com/youtubehollywoodSMALL

In China, Youtube is blocked.   The country has its own Youtube called YOUKU.

These little videos will help people in China pronounce English better.

You can make little videos to explain U.S. culture and to introduce a topic.  Keep the video under 3 minutes long and show words to pronounce them.

<<<  Here is an example of a video that shows words and the letters of the alphabet

Then we can ask them to look at the projects at our school.

Some small businesses don't know how to use GOOGLE+ -- and students can help their local businesses with this skill

This was the school's listing
1.  Find a local business
2.  look for the Google+ listing for the business
3.  If you see the "CLAIM THIS PAGE" announcement, then the business has not yet put information into the Google Plus listing.

here is the map showing the
school's location
YOU can make a difference.  You can affect the Internet by bringing this information to the attention of the owner.  You could become the social media expert for that business.

Here are the steps.

These videos can help the Google + listing...  Links to these
videos will encourage visitors to learn more.

This is where many small business owners need help from teenagers

Look at the steps that are needed.  Students can help small businesses

Show a Business Owner the possibilities

You can learn about Google Apps

Here are some new words to learn, such as "profiles"
(I wonder what a profile is?)
For more information, go to WHPSUS.org and contact a teacher... ask, "How do I learn to become a Google Plus assistant?"

The 12 Global Skills --- let's start with COLLABORATION and WORKING TOGETHER

Tony Wagner describes "Seven Survival Skills" at his blog.

THIS IS THE GOAL... Get these
videos to other people
One of the important skills is "ADAPTABILITY" and "WORKING TOGETHER"....  The following exercise is a way to working with other people -- Please try it for yourself and report your results to me.

Here is a view of the two videos in
the folder that I want to share
LOOK FOR THE DOWN ARROW after the word
"HOLLYWOOD"

Click on the DOWN arrow and
you can see the word "Share"

1.  Sharing a large video with people who don't have access to YOUTUBE.
Youtube is very useful... but some people cannot see Youtube.   Here is a list of countries where YOUTUBE is not freely available.

2.  You can upload a video to GOOGLE DRIVE.  If you have a gmail account, you have 15 GB of free storage.
This is what it looks like when the video is uploaded.  I uploaded these two videos into a FOLDER.

Now I want to set up SHARING with the folder,

You can see the steps in the photos.

You can type in a person's email address
in the lower box and allow them
to edit or just view the file or video
Using this method, YOU can share files with people without putting the video on YOUTUBE.  Perhaps it is a personal or private video and you want to share it with several people but you don't want to put the video on YOUTUBE.   You can use Google DRIVE.

If you are in China, please try this link....

This frame shows the LINK
that you send to people to get into the folder

This is the link that connects other people to my videos that I uploaded to Google Drive.  If you CANNOT see the videos, please email me and let me know.

"Peer Instruction" by Eric Mazur is a useful way to get students working together in class

What is a "peer"?  A peer is another student or another person who is in the same situation that you are.  As a teacher, my peers are trying to make classes more interesting.  As a student, you and your peers can try to use the "peer instruction" method.

You can learn about this method by reading this blog.  There are links to videos that will help you get the idea WHY students need to prepare for class that day before.

These are the steps in the classroom

Here is Mazur's book

This is an excerpt from the book
NOTE:  what do the students do?

This is my review of the book (on books.google.com)

Here are some students at a university using the method.

This is a nice graphic about the flipped classroom.
"Watch a video" is your homework

Here is the use of the phrase "TURN TO YOUR NEIGHBOR"
The blog is called TURN TO YOUR NEIGHBOR because the teacher asks a question and then wants you to discuss that question with other students.
The blog is at blog.peerinstruction.net

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rixx-Qtnt5I
This is a video that shows steps that you can take with the peer instruction method.

Three ways to use projects in Small Schools -- What are these ways?

Welcome to our blog about Projects.
You can start to learn about the value of projects by watching Matt Blazek's video.

You can also learn more about small schools.  Watch this video below and text me three ways that small schools give benefits:  (954) 646 8246 TEXT
or email SteveEnglishTeacher@gmail.com

Projects allow students to follow their interests

Projects let teachers introduce new information

Projects let parents participate and guide the teacher (parents often know more than the student about the student's strengths)

You can see the value of projects at TinyURL.com/BlazekProjects
TinyURL.com/mattblazek

Schools like Big Picture schools (MetCenter.org) and High Tech High in California ask students to "stand and deliver" talks about the progress of the projects.  "Stand and Deliver" is a way to practice speaking.
SEE A PORTFOLIO:  click HERE
Students can also make videos to show their progress. HOW TO MAKE VIDEOS
(a) Shy students can stand behind the camera and show the projects
(b) Confident students can stand in front of the camera
Some parents are worried about the privacy of their children.  You can protect your privacy by making the video "Unlisted" on Youtube and then only people with the link can see the result.

Projects can be helpful for building confidence and for showing "THIS IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED."  Students can put their best effort into a project and they can create a project over several weeks.  An exam might not ask questions about what a student knows.
A student might be ill or might not have slept well before an exam.
A project allows your best effort to be on display.
